About Lindsey Smith

FOUNDER-ALTAHIGHER

I think it is an absolute privilege to support people as they make decisions about their future, and I’ve been doing exactly that since 2004 when I first worked with Aimhigher Liverpool. I’ve also had roles with agencies and projects such as Connexions and a Lifelong Learning Network, as well as within several universities. This means that I have read thousands of personal statements (from both an application and admissions perspective) and I have supported many people to find and access their ideal course.

History…

As you might expect, I absolutely love learning new things and so I’ve often studied alongside my work to enhance my skills and knowledge. I have bachelor’s degrees in English and Psychology, a master’s in Practice-based Research (which focused on white working-class boys’ engagement with outreach) and I have a Level 4 IAG qualification, which I am currently upgrading to a Level 6 in career guidance theory. However, I was the first person in my family to go to university and I was nothing short of erratic when I chose my first course, so I completely understand some of the fear and confusion that can go along with making those decisions.

“It’s very encouraging to have someone patient listening to what I have to say and guide me when I feel like no one is on my side”

Currently…

Thankfully, I grew out of my early chaotic approach to university and now have a BA (hons) in English, a Bsc. (hons) in Psychology, which I gained through seven years of part-time study with the Open University, an NVQ Level 4 in Advice and Guidance (which I am in the process of enhancing to a Level 6 in Career Guidance Theory) and a Msc. in Practice Based Research.

My Masters focused on white working-class boys and the reasons why they engage less with university outreach, and education as a whole, compared with their peers in other demographic groups. I have an enormous passion for learning and inspiring young people to dream big and use education to fulfil those dreams.
