- Alta Higher was established by Lindsey Smith in 2018 to meet the needs of students considering higher education. Lindsey’s background is in widening participation outreach and specialist careers guidance. Alta Higher aims to support all students, regardless of their background, to the right course or degree apprenticeship for them through tailored one-to-one sessions, informative talks and engaging workshops. We believe that everybody has a talent that can enhance their life and we aim to help you find it and make the very most of it.
- Yes. The amount will depend on the type of support that you or your organisation needs. Get in touch via hello@altahigher.co.uk and we will be able to chat about a package that suits your needs. If you are a student who has been approached about free support from Alta Higher, any costs will already have been covered, meaning the service is free to you.
- Alta Higher support complements school and college services to provide support that is tailored to students’ needs. That could mean dedicating additional time and experience to choosing a course or taking a personal statement further to ensure that it truly showcases skills. Alta Higher workshops can also work with target groups of students and tailor sessions to overcome any practical or psychological barriers. We have the utmost respect for school and college teams and adapt all provision to enhance rather than overshadow existing provision. In a recent survey of students we had supported, 100% of respondents said they didn’t feel they would have had the same level of support without Alta Higher and they described the programme as “excellent”.
- Lindsey has worked in and around university applications since 2004, holding posts within universities as well as within organisations such as Aimhigher, Connexions and a Lifelong Learning Network. Within universities, Lindsey has worked alongside admissions and been heavily involved in processes such as Clearing. Lindsey has also proofread thousands of personal statements. This gives Lindsey a unique insight into university applications from both sides and, along with her careers qualifications, means that she is able to offer support with all elements of the process. Lindsey also holds degrees in English, Psychology and a master’s degree in practice-based learning, focused on white working-class boys’ lack of engagement with university outreach.

- No. Although there are tens of thousands of amazing courses available through universities, it still will not be right for everyone. If you would like to access higher learning alongside employment, it is worth considering a degree apprenticeship or part-time learning routes. Alta Higher can also support with these options.
